Food represents connections throughout the novel. Anna and Luke meet over lunch, and although she cannot remember what some of the food in her soup is called, she is still able to connect to the other residents. Eve is connected to Rosalind because of food. She is a chef and this is the only job she can find in the school district that has something that she did on her resume.
