Throughout the narrative, Summer has what might best be described as a love/hate relationship with them: in spite of her experience, she still finds them beautiful, and consistently integrates them into the art she draws in her sketchpad. Nevertheless, she is simultaneously terrified of them, and of again catching malaria.
