Gen is described as an enigma, who is quick-tempered, rude, snide, and even childish. He is frequently rebellious and tests the limits set by the magus, much as a child tests the limits established by his elders. He can be seen as a man of composite talents who combines the brain and the brawn of his traveling companions—resembling the magus in his scholarship and breadth of knowledge and Pol in his use of the sword.
