In the novel, writing represents the only means of communicating freely in an oppressive regime, and thus serves as one of the only mediums of personal expression. By extension, writing is one of the few forms of agency, denied to most citizens of Gilead: Agnes only learns how to write when she becomes a Supplicant, and, combined with her education in reading, it is how she learns truths that the regime has hidden from her. The narration of the three main characters are all written testimonies, and they function as a way of exposing the regime after it is fallen.
