How does the author use foreshadowing in The Tenth Circle?

In Chapter Four, Laura arrives home after leaving Daniel in town to search for Trixie, and Laura "steeled herself to wait for whatever came next." This indicates that Laura is expecting the worst with regard to Trixie's disappearance but it is actually an indication that Laura is expecting to be caught for murdering Jason.
