The book is divided into eight chapters and an prologue. The prologue outlines a time when Daniel Stone had lost his daughter Trixie for a few moments while visiting Boston. Trixie had been little more than a toddler. She was riding in a stroller when Daniel mistook another stroller for his own. The chapter outlines Daniel's frantic search and his relief at finding Trixie unharmed. There is a correlation to what happens later to Trixie who, at fourteen, runs away from home after alleging rape. The loss is symbolic and carries through the entire story
