The memoir is aimed at adults. There are open discussions about sensitive topics, including sex and abuse. There are curse words throughout, representative of the way most of the men talked to Moehringer from the time he was a child. For example, the men taught him the various ways to use a specific curse word during one of his summer forays to the beach with Charlie's friends. Several of the people were very interested in language, and some turned often to the biggest words they knew. There are also lengthy conversations about history, literature, and sports. Moehringer also uses the language specific to the bar. For example, when someone offered to buy Moehringer a drink, Charlie would say he was “backed up” on the buyer. Moehringer took time to explain many of these phrases.
