Why is the symbolism of fire in the novel, The Ten Thousand Doors of January?

The fires represent evil. Many of the Doors destroyed by Locke’s men are destroyed by fire. These include the Door that January discovered in Kentucky, the Door in St. Ours mansion, and the Door that Ade discovered in the Rocky Mountains.
