Why does Locke drink from a jade cup in the novel, The Ten Thousand Doors of January?

Locke says that drinking out of a jade cup has the power of keeping him young. It turns out that Locke is the founder of the Society and that he is centuries old. The jade cup is a symbol of endless youth.
