Why does January cut words into her arm in order to unlock the door in her room in the novel, The Ten Thousand Doors of January?

Because January does not have a pen and ink in the asylum, she is forced to cut the words into her arm in order to first unlock the door in her room, and then create a Door to take her out of the asylum.
