Brattleboro, the asylum where Locke has January confined, forbids Jane and Samuel to visit January, but Havemeyer is allowed a visit. Havemeyer scares January so badly during his visit that she decides that she needs to escape. January is so desperate to escape that she cuts the words into her arm so she can create a Door out of the asylum.
