Why is Manami hesitant to become involved with Nishimo in the novel, The Ten Loves of Nishino?

Manami and Nishimo work for the same company, thus, she is determined not to become involved with him because she wants to succeed at her job, and fears the consequences of "conducting an affair at the office" (46).
