Why does Manami envy the mechanical doll in the novel, The Ten Loves of Nishino?

While Manami and Nishino are out walking, she notices the doll on the marionette clock in town. Manami notes that she would like to be the doll because it has a discreet series of movements and a distinct function. She wishes that she had a life that felt more controlled and more orderly.
