What does Russell see when O.C. takes him to Montezuma in the novel, The Teacher’s Funeral?

When O.C. takes Russell to Montezuma, Russell sees the train yard filled with tramps who are struggling to survive. Seeing this makes him realize that traveling to the Dakotas might not be everything he believed it would be.
