The collection's main focus is in women overcoming their situations. The women are presented in varying types of subjugation, but they find their strength to overcome their oppressor. Clora frees her soul from Ruth; Sally flees after being told she has been sold into marriage; Rose gets rid of the witch that possesses her body; Xīng kills Maude; and Lucy frees Mary from the witch in the woods.
