How does John Cheever use imagery in The Swimmer?

The imagery begins with the brightness of an affluent suburb. The colors are bright and vivid. As Neddy swims through the pools the imagery becomes progressively darker and grey. The imagery becomes distorted and even disorienting as Neddy makes his way through passages of time.
