What was judicial override, and why did it often happen?

Judicial override was the ability of judges to override a jury. If a jury handed down a sentence of life in prison, a judge in Alabama could override the jury and send the convicted person to the electric chair. Judges did it because the more men they sent to the death chair, the more votes they would get when they were up for election.
