Hinton's mother had always told him you could catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. That statement affected how he treated the guards and the warden. Hinton knew that violence never was a way to get what you wanted. If he wanted something, he had to cooperate. So that was how he dealt with the guards and warden when he wanted something.
