In Alabama when someone died, you would bring food to the family. It was a way to show love and support. After the guard brought Henry the news of his father's death and then left, Hinton passed him some of his coffee. The other men started sharing precious food items, too--candy bars, soup, coffee, pieces of chocolate, and fruit. All day, men passed items down to Henry to show their love and support.
