Death row prisoners were guaranteed a direct appeal to the State appellate courts--the Court of Criminal Appeals and the Alabama Supreme Court. The State of Alabama offered no assistance to death row inmates. They were dependent upon their attorney to get the appeals filed. There was a one-year statute of limitations to get the appeals filed.
