Who is Magda from The Sun, the Moon and what is their importance?

Magda is a native of Cuba and Yunior's long-suffering girlfriend. He describes Magda as a "forgiving soul," who is a devout Catholic, and who implores a group of nuns in Pennsylvania to pray for her family. Magda is a teache, and she continues to pursue an education even though she has earned a degree. "She's the nerd every librarian in town knows," says Yunior. Magda is a beautiful, young woman with "big eyes and big hips and dark curly hair you could lose a hand in."
