During two scenes in the novel, water is used to symbolize a turning point for Eva. The first comes when she goes cliff jumping off the Dive; the second is when she takes hour-long baths in her hotel room after she returned from her runaway with Jerome. In both instances, water is used to emphasize Eva's fluid personality—her identity is in flux as she reinvents her sense of self.
