Tea signifies a stable and calming object in the lives of the novel's characters. Amid or after significant events, tea is always brewed, usually by Bea or Lily, the two most stable characters in the novel. For example, after Heloise attempted to burn down the house, everyone gathered around a table drinking tea—they needed it to stay grounded, to stay aware and alert.
