Paintings are briefly and frequently mentioned throughout the novel, signifying visual and emotional expressions that cannot be conveyed verbally. Characters like Evan and Jerome find so much success with their paintings because they are able to pour themselves into their work; when it comes to verbally communicating with their loved ones, however, they leave much to be desired. Thus, paintings represent an expressive outlet utilized by talented and complex characters.
