The independence movement represents Amisha’s desire for personal sovereignty in her own life. Throughout the book, Gandhi’s struggle is repeatedly mentioned. Often these passages are juxtaposed with Amisha discussing her own oppression. Amisha desires to be free from the bonds of cultural tradition in the same way Indians desire to be free from the British at large.
