How does the author use foreshadowing in The Star?

In the story's opening paragraph, the narrator says, "Once, I believed that space could have no power over faith . . . that the heavens declared the glory of God's handiwork". He goes on to say that something has shaken that belief, foreshadowing his tale of the things that have left his faith "sorely troubled."
