The Berlin Wall, and moreover its destruction in 1989, is representative of the fall of communism, and a wave of political change in Europe. The sight of the Berlin Wall is what sparked Gordievsky's hatred for communism, and as a result he dedicates his life to bringing an end to this political system. The collapse of the wall comes at the end of the Cold War, and coincides with the fall of the Soviet Union.
