Gordievsky's purchase of the homosexual pornography magazine is symbolic of his love and curiosity of Western culture. When posted to Denmark, Oleg Gordievsky purchased a homosexual pornography magazine out of sheer curiosity. This kind of literature was illegal in Russia, and Gordievsky had no idea that purchasing this magazine would put him at risk of blackmail from the Danish intelligence service. Luckily, Gordievsky was already planning to change sides, and therefore PET never used this against him.
