What are the motifs in The Sound of the Mountain by Yasunari Kawabata?

Death is a recurring idea in the novel from the very first pages. Shingo thinks about his own death as he contemplates the loss of his memory, hearing in the night the sound of the mountain warning him that his death is imminent.
