Mrs. Proffit is a very religious woman. She is always going to church and speaking about God and Jesus to her family. When her husband is killed, Mrs. Proffit becomes even more religious. She goes to church more often and she invites Reverend Tarter over for dinner a lot.
When Eddie stops talking, she blames herself for his being mute. She sends the reverend to Eddie's room to talk to him.
