Dan Moeltske is an athlete at the high school—playing two different sports. He is also a very intelligent boy. He attends the Red Brick Church and is the present of the school organization—Youth for Christ. Dan is also enrolled in Mrs. Lloyd's class. When Dan brings the book to the attention of Reverend Tarter, Tarter convinces Dan that he and the other students must work to ban the book from the curriculum because it is against their religious beliefs.
