Joe Fontaine is the new boy at school. Although born in California, Joe has lived in France for a great amount of his childhood and speaks fluent French. Joe is a very good-looking boy and is extremely musically talented, playing the guitar, the trumpet, and the clarinet, making him a prime target for all the girls at school, including Lennon's archenemy, Rachel. However, Joe seems to choose Lennon, coming to her house every morning for weeks when summer begins in order to entice her into playing her clarinet with him. Joe becomes friends with Lennon's family despite their crazy tendencies and seems accepting of all the things that embarrass Lennon. However, when Joe sees Lennon kissing Toby, it is the one betrayal he cannot forgive. For this reason, Joe ends the relationship, but soon comes to understand Lennon's emotional state and learns to forgive.
