DeLillo employs stylistic techniques to tease out the relationship between language and meaning and the effect that technology has on this relationship. Many of the descriptions are simply streams of information or lists of terms. For example, his description of the Super Bowl is sparse and clunky, but manages to convey the Super Bowl without explicitly mentioning it: “…this was the final game of the football season, American football, two teams, eleven players each team, rectangular field one hundred yards long, goal lines and goal posts at either end” (18). In this example, language is used to conjure up meaning. This stylistic choice reinforces the idea that language and meaning are socially constructed.
