Why does Jack call Mr. Ullman?

Jack calls Mr. Ullman on the phone, questioning him about the information he finds in the scrapbook. He asks him about all the notorious figures who stayed in the hotel and if it was a whorehouse. Jack wonders why he even called Mr. Ullman, thinking he wants to be fired before it is too late.
