The novel also examines geopolitical divisions in relation to the history of colonialism between Britain and India, as some characters struggle to fully settle their identities between the cultural spheres of these two distant countries. London, England and Calcutta, India are the two primary settings of the novel. England and India often bear economic and cultural connections due to Britain’s history of colonially exploiting India. This history, and these connections, create personal and political tensions, as shown in the novel. For example, Ila was born in India, but she lives most of her life in England. She sometimes faces racism from British people, and she also faces criticism from some of her Indian family members. For example, when Ila chooses to attend college in England, Tha’mma says, “She’s gone there because she’s greedy” (77). Similarly, the narrator struggles to resolve his identity between India and England, as was born and raised in India, but he has a deep fascination with British history. Also, he has interpersonal connections with various people in England.
