Where does Dimmesdale go at the beginning of Chapter 12, and why?

Dimmesdale walks to the scaffold in the town square, and begins to climb it. He did this because he intended on publicly announcing his guilt and shame as Hester had been made to do. He wants to share Hester's shame and relieve his guilt.
