The one object that moves with Ray and Moth throughout this whole story is The South West Coast Path: From Minehead to South Haven Point guidebook by Paddy Dillon. This book contains a map, instructions, and anecdotes about the places they visit. It is described as a little brown book with a comforting waterproof cover and an Ordnance Survey map that covered the whole path. It was a small book and fit nicely in Ray's hand and in Moth’s pocket. It becomes their trusted guide throughout their journey, and they begin to feel as though Paddy Dillon is a friend of theirs. When Ray is feeling the most lost, she clings to the map for giving her a direction to move forward in.
