In the Rock and the River book, Chapter 1, what was the reactions?

Reactions to the demonstration? Threats?

Roland and Marjorie are protected by bodyguards.

Sam is frightened by all the people, especially when separated from his brother. Stick, on the other hand, willingly jumps in to help an older black woman, who is being beaten by white men.

Stick is attacked by a man wielding a broken beer bottle, and Sam has to take him to the hospital. Roland is upset with his son because he, himself, had taken a vow against violence.
