In "The Kite Maker," the Dragonflies, or aliens, symbolize immigrants to the United States. When the Dragonflies first arrive on Earth, the humans slaughter them. The Dragonflies that remain years later are pushed to the edges of the human society. The author uses the Dragonflies to expose the systemic racism that plagues and marginalizes black and brown immigrants to the States.
