In "Yaiza," the racquet the narrator gives Yaiza during the tournament symbolizes cruelty. The narrator gives her the racquet not in an attempt to repay Yaiza for her earlier kindness, but in an effort to trump Yaiza's generosity. Her gesture is therefore not pure of heart, and ultimately leads to Yaiza's departure from town.
