In "The Great Escape," the locks on Chani's door symbolize solitude. Though the narrator initially sees Chani's locks as a sign of her paranoia, by the end of the story she realizes that what she has coveted of Chani's is her quiet and secluded life. When she lies inside the apartment, within the perimeter of the once-locked space, the narrator feels alive and free.
