As Paulsen says, generally speaking, when a musher falls off of the sled the dogs keep on going, often for miles. His dogs stopped and came back for him. Not only did they come back for him, but they cleaned his wounds and kept him warm until he could get on the sled, tie his leg down, and let them take him home. His dogs came back for him because of the deep bond he had with his lead sled dog. It was the lead dog that brought the rest of the team to his rescue.
