Who is Tristan?

Tristan is another symbolic stock character: the Good Soldier. He is dedicated to his military training and believes in discipline and obedience. However, he is also a deeply moral character who thinks for himself and questions received truths. Tristan opposes any person or force that advocates for an ends-justify-the-means mentality and believes in the power of research and science to change the world for the better without recourse to violence.
