Who is Martin Guerre, the real Martin Guerre from The Return of Martin Guerre and what is their importance?

Martin Guerre is born in the Basque Country. His family walks a fairly long distance and settles in Artigat, in Languedoc Province, France. Martin marries very young. He is said to be impotent, although his wife refuses to have the marriage annulled. After eight years he has a son, Sanxi, but shortly after flees his village, allegedly for being accused of theft by Martin's father. Martin is believed to have become a lackey for Pedro de Mendoza, a captain of the Spanish Army, and he ends up in the Spanish Army.
