Who is Gustav from The Reptile Room and what is their importance?

Gustav was Uncle Monty's assistant, who was resigned right before the Baudelaires arrived at Uncle Monty's home. Though he never physically appears in the novel, it is later revealed that Count Olaf murdered Gustav and forged his resignation note.
