Who is Dr. Montgomery/Uncle Monty from The Reptile Room and what is their importance?

Uncle Monty is the Beaudelaire children's guardian. He is described as generous, loving, and caring. The children see Uncle Monty as the answer to all their problems. Sadly, Uncle Monty is killed by Count Olaf early in the novel.
