The house of cards Max constructs at the beginning of the first scene is a symbol functioning on the same level in both Henry's play, which is titled House of Cards, and The Real Thing. It represents the delicate construction of truth and lies, love and hate, fear and courage at the core of all the relationships in both plays and, The Real Thing suggests, at the core of every human relationship.
