The Aylward family farm is symbolic of history and inheritance. This is why Eileen is reluctant to tell Nana that Chris has sold off the property. This is also why Nana's health improves when she learns that Chris has gotten the farm back. The farm connects the Aylwards to their generational pasts, while offering them security in the present and for the future.
