What does pool represent?

The pool into which Doreen throws herself is symbolic of despair. In spite of the Aylward women's attempts to include Doreen, Doreen's loneliness and sadness prove too encompassing for her to overcome. She therefore throws herself into this pool, which is rumored to reach to the core of the Earth.
