The blackbird that Saoirse and Eileen bury in "Blackbird" is symbolic of loss and grief. Although Saoirse is still a child at the time of this event, the blackbird's death teaches her about death. Eileen's response to the blackbird's death is also revealing of her lingering grief over her husband's passing.
